When you think about the classic milkshake, pictures of American diners with red leather benches, waitresses with petticoat, and casual college boys with Elvis greats inevitably swirl through your head?

There is a reason for this, because the golden age of cool refreshment was, after all, the 1950s of the USA. The first milkshake comes from a certain Pop Coulson from Chicago.

In 1922 he mixed milk, ice cream, malt, and chocolate together – and was born the "chocolate milkshake". The milkshakes only became known in the USA during the time of Prohibition, when the so-called "milk bars" became fashionable.

At that time, not every household had a blender, so the ingredients had to be "shaken", i.e. shaken. As crazy as it sounds, Americans are so infatuated with the cool sin that they even dedicate their own day to the drink.

The National Chocolate Milkshake Day is traditionally celebrated on 12 September.

You should drink the milkshake immediately after the preparation so that the mixed ingredients cannot separate from each other again. So, how to make a chocolate milkshake? Here we go.

Ingredients for a milkshake with chocolate (4 people)

  • 1 L milk
  • 80 g sugar
  • 200 g chocolate chips (whole milk or bitters)
  • 175 ml of chocolate syrup
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 750 g ice cubes
  • Whipped cream (optional)
  • Chocolate of your choice (optional)
  • Scatters for decorating (optional)

Preparation

  1. Pour the milk, sugar, chocolate syrup, vanilla extract, and ice cubes into a large stand mixer or smoothie maker and mix at a high level for four to five seconds. Depending on the device, the duration may vary, however, the milkshake should be creamy and the ice cubes completely crushed.
  2. Divide the chocolate shake into four equal-sized glasses. Divide the chocolate chips into the four glasses and stir into the milkshake with the help of a spoon.
  3. The milkshake can be decorated with whipped cream, chocolate shavings, or colorful sprinkles. Serve the finished milkshake immediately and enjoy ice-cold

Recipe Notes

Tip: For a healthy yet tasty light version of the chocolate milkshake, replace the sugar with a banana and the milk with buttermilk or kefir. Thanks to the banana, the shake has a wonderfully saturating effect and the acidity of buttermilk refreshes you even on the hottest days of the year!

Now, that we know how to make a chocolate milkshake. Enjoy and stay safe.
